TiltonProgress.com feature and profile of:
Danville Township's new offices at 18 Southgate Drive, Tilton.

Danville Township is an administrative unit of Vermilion County, Illinois responsible for a fifty square mile area of the county, and 32,000 residents. It includes a large part of the City of Danville, all of the Village of Tilton, and several unincorporated settlements from just west of the city to the Indiana line.

The township is responsible to maintain over eighty miles of roads, several parks, four cemeteries, and the only mosquito control truck in the county. As well as managing several emergency and general assistance programs for residents, and the senior transportation unit.

The board consists of four elected officials: The Supervisor is Mr. Mike West, who stood still long enough during the grand opening of the new offices for this interview. The Highway Commissioner, A.J. Wright. Township Assessor, Rick Rohrer. And Clerk, Larry Weatherford. There are also four elected Township Trustees.

The offices used to be in a much older and more crowded, multi-floor facility in Downtown Danville, with limited parking, and no room to expand. Now, in the former carpet store on Southgate, they have plenty of space for both.

One of the primary focuses of the office is various forms of General Assistance. The Township offers assistance to those that meet various qualifications including medical and income guidelines, or in an emergency situation. They also operate a Food Pantry that offers basic supplies to those in need. The hours and contact numbers for these programs is below.
Mr. West said that the traffic to the offices for the various programs had been fairly consistent since the move, and he hoped that would continue.
The Food Pantry serves those in need in the County as well as those in West Central Indiana, it also has an ongoing need for any non-perishable or dry goods (canned items, cereal, etc), for more information about donating, please call the office.

Today, the Tilton Progress team visited the new offices as they celebrated their grand opening, and got a tour of a dozen or so individual offices, a small but serviceable kitchen area, a nicely appointed board room, and plenty of storage for the food pantry as well as all the junk they need.

......and then we attended the open house and official ribbon cutting!

...and now:
Seven Questions with Mike West, Township Supervisor

date of interview, 17 September, 2019

The Desk (left) and Mister Michael West, Danville Township Supervisor.

  1. How long have you been in business / and in this location?
    -    The Township was formed in 1851. The offices were located at the corner of North and Walnut streets in the downtown district for a number of years. They moved to this location in June of this year.
The transformation of the building from carpet store to government offices was done primarily by Township staff and employees so there was minimal impact to the local taxpayer.
  2. How many employees?
    -    About 25 all told, including the various office and field staff members.
  3. Although it may be obvious, what is your business?
    -    This is the administrative offices for Danville Township, and includes the Food Pantry as well as the primary offices of the various administrative staff such as the Assessor.
  4. What do you want people to know about this place?
    -    "That we're here."
    -    Also, that the Township's board meeting and other business is now conducted in this building.
  5. What is the main advantage you see for being located here?
    -    The "fresher and cleaner building" is conveniently located just off Rt 1, on a Danville Bus Route, and with plenty of easy parking. This area is developing and growing and it is good to be part of it.
  6. Any plans to expand?
    -    Yes. This building is Phase One. They are planning a new storage building that will also serve as an emergency shelter, those plans are in the works and should be completed in a couple of years. which means there will be an update!
  7. Anything else you'd like to be on the website about your business.
    -    "We're doing what we do and we hope the people will continue to use us."
